When it debuted in 2022, Magic Eraser quickly became one of the flagship features of the Google Pixel smartphone line. The option to remove unwanted objects in photos with the power of AI quickly spread to other manufacturers, including Samsung’s version called Object Eraser.
And now, Windows is entitled to its own version.
Microsoft
The Photos app for Windows PCs already has a feature called Spot fix that allows users to remove imperfections from images. But this tool now benefits from an AI boost and a new name: Generative erase.
Correct and remove defects from photos
Like Magic Erase, Microsoft explains that Generative erase allows users to correct and eliminate defects in photos, including background objects and various visual clutter. According to the company, the improved version of Spot Fix should give a more realistic result after erasing objects, even on large areas.
To start using Generative erase, click the edit button on an image and choose the erase option. Next, choose the brush size and move over the object to erase.
This feature is currently only available to Windows 11 developers, but it will eventually be accessible to all users of Windows 11 and even Windows 10. Microsoft specifies that for the first time, users of versions higher Older ones will also have access to other AI editing features such as Remove and Replace Background and Blur Background.
Features similar to those of Google in its Photos application
It was only last September that Microsoft introduced Google-like features to its Photos app, including the ability to search for content within photos and support for viewing animated photos.
Granted, most people are content to use their smartphone’s default photo storage app, but if you want a little more organization or a nice backup option, Windows Photos is certainly an attractive one.
