Microsoft is not a small player when it comes to artificial intelligence. As proof: one of its flagship applications is about to inherit a rather welcome functionality.

Although it has many advantages, such as managing a photo library or basic image editing, most uses of Microsoft Photos come down to previewing them.

When it comes to getting down to business with photo editing, we tend to turn to smartphone apps. Especially since they are the ones who accustom us to using tools powered by AI. A privilege that Windows users will soon be able to make their own.

A functionality now seen and reviewed, but still as effective

Are you ashamed of this sick plant that appears in this perfect photo of your garden? Don’t worry, Microsoft has the solution for you. Indeed, the company has developed a new tool, Generative Erase, for its Photo application, directly inspired by Google’s Magic Eraser and what Samsung offers us.

Under Windows, it will therefore be possible to delete one or more parts of an image that you wish to get rid of. All you have to do is select them in Photos and let the magic happen – what we now commonly call “ artificial intelligence “. On its blog, Microsoft demonstrates the capabilities of its tool by making the leash of a small dog and people further away disappear.

A deployment for all in the coming months

Nothing extraordinary, therefore, since we are starting to get used to this kind of tool. On the other hand, we will not regret having access to it under Windows, because the only tools available until now on PC could be a little complicated or painful to use, like Photoshop or certain websites.

Furthermore, the Redmond firm has not forgotten the majority of its users, since this update of its application will not only be available on the classic version of Windows 11. Windows 10 will actually be entitled to the tool of magic eraser, but also to all the artificial intelligence features previously deployed by Microsoft for Photos. Even Windows 11 for ARM processor is in the game, a sign that the latter is more than ever at the center of concerns.

However, if you still don’t have access to it, that’s normal: it’s still being tested. For now, it is only available to Insider program members, on all channels.

If you are concerned, Generative Erase is available from version 2024.11020.21001.0 of Photos. Do not hesitate to share your experience in the comments, and to show us both the great successes of the tool and its worst background generations.
