Windows update: gaming performance drops massively – you should know that

The Windows 11 2022 update is here and it seems to be causing problems. Because the IT security news site Bleepingcomputer reports that owners of Nvidia graphics cards are complaining about performance drops when playing. It was basically known that the Windows 11 autumn update would lead to a loss of performance: Windows 11 – New update costs performance. However, these were effects on the processors. But the performance losses now described in connection with Nvidia graphics cards are a new, previously unknown problem.

Some gamers are reporting stuttering and massive lag when playing games. Apparently, after installing the Windows 11 2022 update, CPU usage dropped significantly: in one example, from a previous 80 percent to then just 5 percent. After removing the autumn update, the problem should be gone.

Such comments accumulate in the Microsoft forum. Those affected unanimously report that the problems will be solved as soon as Windows 11 2022 Update has been removed.

However, one user seems to have a solution: “Increase the priority of the process in Windows Task Manager: right-click, details, right-click again, priority. Then the CPU utilization of this process should no longer be limited”. The user suspects that this is part of the new “Green Power Delivery garbage” (as he puts it) that Microsoft has announced. And further: “By turning it up in stages until the stuttering stopped, I was able to fix my stuttering issues in Final Fantasy XIV. When everyone started mentioning that their processor was capped at 5% for every game, I got excited that got me thinking about the power limit.”

However, Microsoft has not yet confirmed whether this assumption by the user is correct.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed these performance issues when gaming after installing the fall update. Nvidia, on the other hand, is already investigating the problem.

It is better not to install the update for the time being

As long as there is no clarity about this problem or Microsoft and/or Nvidia have not solved it, owners of Nvidia graphics cards should better not install the Windows 11 2022 update.
