Windows 10 users currently have to be careful. As “Bleeping Computer” reports, the ransomware Magniber is distributed via fake Windows Update installers. The software encrypts files stored on the device, thereby preventing access.
Users report that their computer was infected with the malware after a cumulative or security update. However, it turned out that those affected obtained the update from dubious sources. The most common names of the update files are “Win10.0_System_Upgrade_Software.msi” and “Security_Upgrade_Software_Win10.0.msi”.

To regain access to the encrypted files, you have to buy the “My Decryptor” software, for which the criminals charge around $2,500. Currently there seems to be no other way to break the encryption.
Apparently, in this case, private individuals are primarily affected by the campaign. Companies are not the focus. To protect yourself, users should only obtain updates from official sources. When downloading via dubious providers, there is always the danger of getting unwanted malware onto the device.
