Winners & losers: Oppo’s flagship and Samsung’s vulnerability

With the Find X5, Oppo announced its new flagship generation this week. With the focus on the Pro model, the manufacturer has once again shown that it is in the same league as the big players in the mobile market. Samsung, on the other hand, made headlines at the end of the week for selling millions of smartphones with a serious security vulnerability.

But before we talk about the ups and downs of the last few days, I would like to remind you that today MWC 2022 starts, with the first day focusing on the press. In the afternoon, Huawei and Samsung will open the congress with launch events. In addition, the ShowStoppers event takes place, where we see many products from often unknown manufacturers for the first time. We’ll keep you here NextPit up to date on everything coming out of Barcelona.

As usual, here are some reading recommendations for this Sunday with the most important news highlights of the last few days:

The winner of the week: Oppo and the new “Find X5” generation

Oppo announced three new smartphones this week: the Find X5, Find X5 Pro and Find X5 Lite. Like last year, the big highlight of the series is the Pro version, which once again stands out with its excellent camera. Oppo relies on the partnership with Hasselblad and the smartphone is equipped with one of the best processors on the market: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The device’s performance is excellent, as we found in our Find X5 Pro review. In addition, Oppo remains quite original with the design of the series and has one of the fastest charging technologies on the market. No wonder the manufacturer ranks third in the ranking of companies that sell the most mobile phones in China.

Expectations for the Oppo flagship were high after the merger with OnePlus and one thing is for sure: the company did not disappoint. The Find X5 Pro is certainly one of the best phones of the year, and it really is a shame it’s not available in all regions (yes, I’m talking the US!).

For the incredible consistency in its releases, Oppo gets the well-deserved title of this week’s winner! Samsung, on the other hand, was caught up in a vulnerability that affected millions of devices and finds itself on the losing side today.

Loser of the week: Samsung and the serious security gap

Samsung is celebrating great pre-sale numbers for the Galaxy S22 range, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra standing out. The company would actually have reason to celebrate this week if it weren’t for the latest report from Tel Aviv University.

According to the report, Samsung has released Galaxy smartphones with a serious security flaw. What’s more, the bug has been known since the release of the Galaxy S8, so it was present in S8, S9, S10, S20, and S21 series models, affecting more than 100 million devices. You can read what the gap is about in detail in the article by my colleague Dustin Porth.

We don’t yet have an exact number of times this vulnerability has been exploited, but one thing is certain: if you own a Samsung smartphone released since 2017, your passwords may not be secure.

This raises a number of questions about the security of our data and passwords on both Samsung and other smartphones, since this bug has not been known until now. I would like to join my colleague Dustin in the pious wish: let’s hope our passwords are secure in the future!

And that’s it for this week with our winners and losers. Tell us in the comments whether you would have decided the same way or differently. And keep an eye out for MWC content on NextPit!
