Winter greetings in Tyrol – Autumn takes a break: Deep “Ottilie” brings snow

The golden autumn takes a short break. An Italian low ensures snowfall at higher and sometimes also at lower altitudes. As a result, wintry driving conditions are also occurring for the first time this winter on roads at higher altitudes. The country’s road maintenance departments are prepared. In the winter sports areas, people are happy about the white splendor. From Monday there will be sunny weather again in Tyrol. The temperatures are also rising.

Last October was the warmest in Austrian measurement history. With the highest temperatures that have been measured, Tyrol is also prominently represented. On October 17th it was 25.6 degrees in Patsch. The bronze medal goes to the “Holy Land”. The golden autumn is now taking a short breather. The Italian low “Ottilie”, which approached during the night, brought large amounts of rain to North and especially East Tyrol on Friday. “The temperatures in the valley range from five to nine degrees. The snow line is between 1,000 and 1,200 meters,” says Ubimet meteorologist Steffen Dietz. “At higher altitudes from 2000 meters along the main ridge of the Alps, I expect 30 to 50 centimeters of snow, in the Arlberg area and the Karwendel with 20 to 30,” calculates the expert soon to start the new season. Ischgl, for example, reported that “Frau Holle” had already conjured up 15 centimeters of fresh snow on the Idalp during the night. Saturday offers six to eleven degrees in the valley. “There will be a lot of clouds and some precipitation,” says Dietz. On Sunday, however, the white splendor will be on the collar again. “In the morning there are a few remaining clouds, in the afternoon more clouds will come from the west. But for the most part it stays dry.” The temperatures are between eight and eleven degrees, in Seefeld between five and six. On Monday and Tuesday the golden autumn returns. When the sun is shining, the temperatures reach nine to 14 or ten to 16 degrees. “Although areas of fog are to be expected in the morning,” concludes the expert. If you haven’t fitted your car with winter tires yet, you still have a grace period in the valley. By the way: the long-term average between 1991 and 2020 shows a positive deviation of around 3.3 degrees in October. It was the eighth month that was too warm this year.
