Winter Olympics: amazing! Athlete turns around after going the wrong way | TextEditorPreviewHistory

This Tuesday, February 15, Jarl Magnus Riiber thought he had won the gold medal in the Nordic combined. But the Norwegian, very focused, lost first place due to a careless mistake.

It will certainly remain one of the images of the Beijing Olympics. This Tuesday, February 15, Jarl Magnus Riiber thought he would win the gold medal in the Nordic combined large hill. A few days after missing the competition on a small hill, since positive for Covid-19, the Norwegian won the first run. Three-time World Cup winner and four-time world champion in the discipline, he took the lead in the Nordic combined by winning the ski jump, with a jump to 142 meters. It was therefore 44 seconds ahead of the Estonian Kristjan Ilves and the Japanese Ryota Yamamoto that he set off for the cross-country skiing event. But for Jarl Magnus Riiber not everything went as planned.

After a little less than 2.5 km covered and six minutes of racing and while he had increased his lead by a handful of seconds, he took the wrong turn in the cross-country stadium. Although he quickly realized his mistake, Jarl Magnus Riiber lost precious seconds to turn around and join the other cross-country skiers. And the young man said goodbye to the title! Quickly joined, Jarl Magnu Riiber ended up dropping out of the leading group after 8.5 kilometers. It was his compatriots, Jørgen Graabak and Jens Luraas Oftebro, who won the gold and silver medals in the Nordic combined. The bronze medal, meanwhile, was won by the Japanese Akito Watabe.

“It’s a stupid mistake”

The airheaded sportsman finished the race well… but in eighth place, far from the title he was aiming for. “It’s a stupid mistake and it’s not fun to show the world that maybe I’m losing a gold medal on this, he reacted once the race was over. I was too focused on technique and tried to stay calm and stuff. When I looked up, I saw the finish line. Then, I especially wanted to take off my skis.” For the young man, the Olympic Games are cursed since four years ago, in PyeongChang, he finished twice in fourth place. Jarl Magnu Riiber still has a chance of leaving China with a medal around his neck with the team event scheduled for Thursday 17 February.
