Wirecard scandal: TVNow secures documentary drama about the financial scandal

The planned documentary drama about the rise and fall of the Dax company Wirecard will be broadcast in 2021 – on the TVNow streaming service.

In mid-July, Nico Hofmann (60), head of the UFA film company, had already told an interview with the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" that a film about the balance sheet scandal about the Dax company Wirecard was being planned. Now the RTL media group has announced that the film will be created for the TVNow streaming service. Directed by Raymond Ley (61), who also wrote the script together with his wife Hannah Ley (50), a 90-minute documentary drama will be produced, which TVNow will show in the first quarter of 2021.

"Between clever crime and belief in technology"

In the documentary film adaptation, the circumstances and background of this financial scandal, which is unique in Germany, as well as the history of the company and its managers Markus Braun (ex-boss), Jan Marsalek (COO) and Alexander von Knoop (CFO) are highlighted.

"The Wirecard case not only provides the template for a unique economic crime thriller, it is also a drama among kings – between cunning crime and belief in technology. There is hardly a facet of our economic coexistence that would not be affected: serious mistakes in supervision, political blue eyes , cheated investors and fantasies of power that see the international stock market like a civil war (…) ", says Nico Hofmann.

The concept of the documentary drama comes from Georg Meck, head of the business department of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung", Bettina Weiguny, freelance author, and the Ley couple. In addition, UFA Fiction "develops a format (6×45 minutes) that follows on from the events".
