Wireless charging: the first smartphones and accessories with the Qi2 standard will arrive at the end of 2023


The Wireless Power Consortium has formalized the adoption and upcoming launch of the Qi2 wireless charging protocol. The organization has more than 400 member companies and promotes its standard, Qi. A decision made in its name influences the design of products from names as prestigious as Apple, Samsung, or even Microsoft.

Developed by the WPC, Qi is a wireless charging technology that uses electromagnetic fields to transfer energy between two objects. It is found in particular in smartphonestablets, smartwatches and other electronic devices.

Paul Struhsaker, director of the WPC, explains the motivations behind the adoption of Qi2: “Consumers and retailers have told us of their confusion about Qi-certified devices and those who claim to work with Qi, but are not certified. This creates a bad user experience and can even lead to security issues.”

Qi2 promises faster wireless charging times and less battery wear

Apple, whose iPhone 14 Pro uses wireless charging, for example, is one of the main architects of this new standard. Qi2 is indeed based on MagSafe, a patented technology from the Cupertino company. With the latter, “the Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile will ensure that phones or other mobile products powered by rechargeable batteries will be perfectly aligned with charging devices, enabling better energy efficiency and faster charging “.

According to the WPC, in addition to being more efficient, the Qi2 will make it possible to do without cables. This is a real ecological argument for its use. It is in fact estimated that nearly a billion devices will be sold worldwide in 2023. Furthermore, the launch of the Qi2 standard, the successor to Qi, will further open the wireless charging market to devices that cannot be charged from flat surface to flat surface.
