A light aircraft with three occupants had to make an emergency landing in a suburb of Sydney (Australia) on Wednesday. On board was a married couple (30 and 26) – and their baby (1). The emergency landing was successful, the passengers are fine.
“They were okay, a bit shaken, that was obviously not the intended route for them – but they were fine, we did not have to treat them medically,” said the head of the emergency services, David Stubbs, compared to the broadcaster ABC.
Blessing in disguise
It is assumed that the engine of the light aircraft failed. The landing on the beach was successful because the tide was low on Collaroy Beach in a suburb of Sydney. So the pilot had a lot of space for landing.
In addition, the temperatures in Sydney were cool, which is why there were hardly any people on the beach. If there had been more visitors to the beach, “the landing could have ended in disaster,” says David Stubbs.
Aviation authority investigates emergency landing
An attempt was made to tow the plane from the beach with a beach buggy. However, it got stuck at first. A later attempt succeeded in removing the plane from the sand.
According to the broadcaster, the aircraft is a Tecnam P2008, a single-engine aircraft that was built in Italy. The Australian aviation authority is now investigating the emergency landing. (euc)
