The hottest AI technology, OpenAI’s GPT, received a major update on Tuesday which is now available in the premium version of the ChatGPT chatbot.

The new GPT-4 can generate much longer text strings, respond when people give it images, and is designed to better avoid the AI pitfalls seen in the old GPT-3.5, OpenAI said. For example, on bar exams that lawyers must pass to practice law, GPT-4 ranks in the top 10% of scores, compared to the bottom 10% for GPT-3.5, the company said.

GPT stands for Generative Pretrained Transformer, referring to the fact that it can generate text on its own and uses an AI technology called transformer, which Google pioneered. He is trained on vast expanses of data harvested from the internet, learning mathematically to spot patterns and reproduce styles.

GPT-4 is a multimodal AI

OpenAI has been making its GPT technology available to developers for years, but ChatGPT offers a simple interface that has sparked an explosion of interest, experimentation, and concern about the technology’s drawbacks.

Already last week, information had leaked, according to which GPT-4 would make it possible to generate text from a video. Andreas Braun, technical director of Microsoft Germany, had mentioned “multimodal models which will offer completely different possibilities, for example videos”.

Since GPT-4 is a multimodal AI, use cases can go beyond text, unlike previous models. Holger Kenn, director of business strategy at Microsoft Germany, said AI could translate text into video, music and images.

A text to video generator is not a totally new concept, since tech giants such as Meta and Google already have such templates. Meta has Make-A-Video and Google Imagen Video. They both use AI to produce videos from user data. However, Meta and Google’s technologies remain at the research stage and are not publicly available, which puts OpenAI in an ideal position to stay ahead of the generative AI niche.
