Putin’s hope that Brexit could permanently split the Western alliance has not been fulfilled. Rather, the war against Ukraine shows Great Britain how strongly its security interests remain linked to the European continent.
When Britain voted to leave the EU in 2016, Russian propaganda media clearly took the side of Brexit. The Kremlin obviously saw an opportunity to drive a wedge between the Western Allies. Six years later, Vladimir Putin’s hope has turned out to be an illusion: the West has reacted remarkably unanimously to the invasion of Ukraine, with the EU, the US and the UK in close coordination enforcing harsh economic sanctions against Moscow.
