Apple has announced the innovations to come for iPad with new collaborative tools and the possibility of connecting its tablet to an external screen.
After the novelties for the home, the new MacBook or iOS 16, Apple also took advantage of its WWDC conference to present the novelties for iPadOS 16, its operating system planned for its own iPad tablets. New products that focus mainly on professional uses.
In addition to the many new features of macOS Ventura and iOS 16 also integrated into iPadOS 16, the manufacturer took advantage of a long presentation of iOS 16 to discuss the new collaboration tools integrated into its product ecosystem. Concretely, iPadOS – like iOS and macOS – can thus be used to launch collaboration within documents, Notes or Keynote simply by pressing the sharing option and giving access to members of a conversation on Messages . The various participants will then be able to access the document stored in the cloud and modify it as is already possible on Google Drive for example. It will also be possible to do the same by sharing a Safari tab in a FaceTime or Messages conversation so that the various participants can access it. Apple has indicated that new APIs will be offered to developers to make their applications compatible with these collaboration tools.

A new collaborative whiteboard application
Also within the framework of the collaboration, Apple announced the arrival, later in the year, of a new application. Called Freeform, it will provide access to a large whiteboard and share it between different people to take notes, make drawings, diagrams or share links. The idea this time is reminiscent of what Microsoft already offers with Whiteboard.
But in addition to the applications themselves, it is indeed on the display side that the real novelty of iPadOS 16 will arise. Apple tablets will now be able to display several applications more easily at the same time. They will also be compatible with external displays. Concretely, as with DeX at Samsung, you can directly connect an iPad to an external screen to extend the display and interact with both screens at the same time.
On the window management side, the main novelty comes under the name of Stage Manager and will allow easier management of multitasking. Applications will no longer necessarily take up the entire screen display, but can be minimized, resized and flipped one behind the other, much like what we are already used to on a Windows computer or macOS.
iPadOS 16 is available tonight in developer beta. The open beta version will arrive in July while we can expect a general public availability next fall.
