The software allowing to run Windows applications on Mac finally allows to play Diablo IV on a MacBook.

Whoopi Goldberg is going to be happy. The American actress had recently railed against the absence of a port of Diablo IV on Mac, which prohibited him from playing the latest installment of his favorite franchise.

CrossOver 23 is compatible with DirectX 12

The developers of CrossOver have heard the complaints of the genius actress of Sister Actbut also thousands of other private Mac users of Blizzard’s latest, which has already sold millions of copies around the globe.

The publisher CodeWeavers announced last June the arrival of a big update of CrossOver, which would then go to version 23. This new iteration of the application, which allows you to run Windows games on a Mac or Windows , specifically supports DirectX 12, the set of graphics and audio APIs for running games on Windows or Microsoft’s Xbox.

The latter is now available for everyone on the official website of the software. As a reminder, CrossOver is a paid application, offered at a price of 74 euros for one year of use, or 484 euros for a lifetime license. It is also possible to test the solution for free for 14 days.

Apple intends to work twice as hard to convince game developers

CrossOver 23 currently only supports two titles under DirectX 12: Diablo IV of course, but also Diablo II: Resurrected. The developers of the application explain their wish to quickly increase the number of compatible titles, but it will be necessary to be satisfied with these two today.

CrossOver 23 also supports geomerty shaders, and supports the EA app, which will soon replace Origin. The latter allows players to retrieve games from the publisher to install them on their Mac and run them directly on their machine. Uninstalling games is finally possible directly from the software interface.

If CrossOver 23 provides a solution for all gamers who do not wish to trade their MacBook for a Windows PC, Apple is also working on its side to make its environment more open to developers. With the upcoming release of macOS Sonoma, the annual update to the Mac operating system, Apple is introducing the Game Porting Tool, a tool for developers to transcribe their PC titles for the Mac in a more or less less straightforward. The latter can, for example, translate DirectX 12 code into Metal 3, Apple’s graphics API in real time.

It remains to be seen whether developers will take the time necessary to adapt their most recent titles for Apple computers, or will be satisfied with the gigantic market that the PC world still represents today.
