Garmin completes its range of Varia radars with the arrival of a new reference, the RCT715, which also acts as a “dash cam” for cyclists. Thus, if it is still a rear position light incorporating a radar to warn the user of the arrival of a vehicle (with visual and audible notifications), it now incorporates a camera capable of Continuously record and isolate video footage to a specific time in the event of an incident.

Indeed, the system identifies these particular moments to automatically record the events taking place before, during and after the incident in a secure file, constituting as much evidence in the event of a dispute. It is obviously possible to manually activate the recording of a sequence if desired.

From a technical point of view, the integrated camera captures photos and videos up to Full HD 1080p at 30 frames per second. A configuration in which, with the radar and the light permanently on, the autonomy of the Varia RCT715 is approximately 4 hours. It is possible to climb to 6 hours in the “daytime flash” position, or even more by setting up a video recording in 720p. Recording is done on a 16 GB SD card (supplied).

The Varia RCT715 is compatible with a selection of Garmin bike GPS and connected watches, but also of course with the Varia smartphone application or with the RideWithGPS application. In this way, it is possible to couple the display of a map and navigation information with radar notifications and alerts. Good news, Garmin has reviewed and corrected its radar mounting system on the seat tube. It now provides flawless support whatever its shape (round, “D” or aerodynamic).

Unsurprisingly, the Garmin Varia RCT715 is positioned at the very top of the Varia radar range, at a recommended retail price of €399. A high price for a safety accessory which may nevertheless be of interest to road cyclists wishing to couple position lights and radar, and wishing to protect themselves in the event of a road accident. Those who consider the camera option too expensive and penalizing for the battery can always take a look at the manufacturer’s other references, such as the RTL515 sold for €170.
