with “Oppenheimer”, “Poor Creatures” and “Anatomy of a Fall”, the revenge of the dark rooms

The triumph of dark rooms (Oppenheimer), the swan song of a certain prestige television model (Succession) and a little kick of the donkey to the landerneau of French cinema (Anatomy of a fall): the Golden Globes once again summed up the state of the entertainment industry, Sunday January 7, during their 81e edition, which took place, as tradition dictates, at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, near Los Angeles.

Oppenheimer, nominated eight times, won five awards: best dramatic film, best director, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr), best soundtrack. A consecration for Christopher Nolan, slayer of “dangers” streaming cinema.

On the series side, the last season of Succession won four awards: best drama series, best actress (Sarah Snook), best actor (Kieran Culkin) and best supporting actor (Matthew Macfadyen), leaving only the supporting female role to The Crown (Elisabeth Debicki, who plays Princess Diana), also in her final turn. Succession is the latest avatar of the high-end television model imposed since the 1990s by the pay channel HBO, whose content has since been swallowed up by the video-on-demand service Max, following the Warner Bros-Discovery merger . And perhaps the ultimate avatar, after months of restructuring, layoff plans and budget cuts imposed by the most hated CEO in Hollywood, David Zaslav.

Third triumph, that of Justine Triet, whoseAnatomy of a fall received the prize for best foreign film and best screenplay. Twice on stage, the director did not play politics as during the presentation of her Palme d’Or – nor, moreover, than any other winner – but she was able to savor the moment, while the committee responsible for presenting a French film for the best foreign film category at the Oscars preferred it The Passion of Dodin Bouffant, provoking controversy. The campaign for the Oscars, whose nominations will be announced on January 23, is looking good, even without the support of France.

For the Golden Globes, a second chance

The balance between studios and streaming services within the list will, like every year, be scrutinized and analyzed in Hollywood. In the end, series-wise, it’s a Yalta. Netflix leads the way with five trophies thanks to the success, on the miniseries side, ofRelentless (best miniseries, best actress, Ali Wong, best actor, Steven Yeun). Warner Bros Discovery obtains four trophies with Successionand Disney, via its Hulu streaming service and its FX channel, three statuettes thanks to The Bear, who won everything on the comedy side: best series, best actress (Ayo Edebiri) and best actor (Jeremy Allen White).
