Acting as both a test for PlayStation and for Tom Holland, still looking for real success without wearing the Spider-Man costume, the film Uncharted exceeded expectations for its first days of operation. The specialized press reports that the film will have generated $139 million at the box office by Monday evening, knowing that its budget is estimated at $120 million. If the quality of the feature film can be debated, the question of profitability therefore already arises less.
Already one of the 20 biggest adaptations of video games to cinema, Ruben Fleischer’s film (zombieland, Venom) has grossed $44.1 million in North America since its release on Friday and projections give it $52 million at the end of this Monday, February 21, US holiday. Adding the $88 million from 62 other territories, the film is already a commercial success and one of the best starts for a video game adaptation. Uncharted must also be released in other territories, including China, where it will be screened from March 14.
After North America, other top contributors include those from the United Kingdom ($16.4 million), Russia ($9.6 million), Spain ($7 million) and France (6.3 million dollars) where the film had also made its debut as part of a preview at the Grand Rex on Friday February 11, with the added bonus of a surprise appearance by Tom Holland in the audience. According to statistics from its launch weekend, the film Uncharted attracted a majority of men (60%) most of whom were 35 or younger.
In addition to signing a considerable start for the first film stamped PlayStation Productions, the success of the film Uncharted is for Sony Pictures a new validation of its bet aiming to remain faithful to exclusive cinema releases, when other large production companies have preferred to bet on their subscription (Disney +, Paramount +, HBO Max) since the start of the pandemic.
