With the iPhone 14, Apple increases the price of replacing batteries

The iPhone 14s have just been released and it’s not just their selling price that has increased. The prices for a battery replacement out of warranty have also inflated and exceed 100 € in France.

How the pricing table works

Replacing the battery in your iPhone 14 could cost you dearly. Apple has taken advantage of the release of its new phones to significantly increase the cost of repairing batteries. Across the entire new iPhone range, an out-of-warranty, non-AppleCare+ battery replacement will cost €119.

A now forgotten “batterygate”

The price of this service, displayed in black and white on the Apple site, is much higher than that displayed for the iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Replacing the battery of one of these models costs today 75 €. Apple has therefore increased the price of this repair by approximately 60% with the iPhone 14. This confirms the general increase in the prices of spare parts that Apple already indicated a few days ago on its index calculation grid of repairability.

If the iPhone 14s are a priori (slightly) easier to repair than the iPhone 13, the battery size of the new models (except the Pro Max) is also larger. This may partly explain the increase in tariffs. With production of spare parts for the iPhone 14 also just starting, it’s little wonder that their prices are still high. Hopefully, by the time those brand new iPhones need a new battery, it will be possible to find cheaper replacement parts.

Symbolically, this price increase is also a sign that the company has put the “batterygate” scandal behind it. When Apple was suspected of restricting the performance of its old iPhones, the price of replacing a battery had fallen to 29 € to encourage people to keep their phone. Since then, the price has increased again and changing the battery of an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus now costs 55 €.

Prices out of warranty

Please note that all these prices are expressed without guarantee. In France, within two years of purchase, the replacement of a defective battery is covered by the legal guarantee of conformity. No need to worry right away. Then, Apple offers its AppleCare + offer if you want to continue to protect your iPhone against the little vagaries of life.

Otherwise, until you need to change the battery of your iPhone 14, you can also start repairing it at home, a much less complicated operation than you might think. In addition, the anti- waste of 2020 has forced Apple to offer second-hand spare parts since January 1, 2021. Enough to lower the bill if you are comfortable with a screwdriver.
