This year, on the occasion of the start of the school year, the Ministry of National Education is developing a brand new program for learning to read: the Lego method.

On September 2, the main school year 2021-2022 took place, the opportunity for the Ministry of National Education to launch a whole new method of learning for reading, called Lego. In total, 370 CP classes, spread across all classes, volunteered to experiment with this new program advocated by Jean-Michel Blanquer.

This new learning technique was developed by an inspector, educational advisers and teachers during training days and inherited from neurosciences by proposing in particular to approach reading through letters, their association and not through sound.
“There are a lot of interesting things”, declared Annabelle Fiévet, teacher of schools in Rep in Trappes, at BFMTV. “It happens that students arrive in first grade without hearing the sounds well. Entering reading through the letter does not put them in difficulty. One of the many advantages of the Lego method is the fact that there is no illustration or character to find in the learning books that impacted the concentration of some children.

The syllabic is necessary

One month after the start of the school year, the teacher has found a real rhythm: each week, two new letters or two new groups of letters are discussed.
“Before, I took too much time. I thought I would help my students in difficulty, but it was the opposite. The fact of waiting does not make reading efficient. Especially since the progression is thought in this method so that the ‘you don’t approach complex sounds too quickly. ” Students are “a few months early,” said Annabelle.

“They were lost and no longer knew what to do between the global, mixed or syllabic methods. These battles have lasted too long even though there is a consensus on learning to read, we see. although the syllabic is necessary. “, assured Isabelle Goubier, one of the inspectors behind the method.
“My only wish is to help teachers advance and succeed in their students.”, she asserted.

The Lego method is, however, not yet complete: it will be completed by the end of the year with the addition of a section on understanding.
The National Ministry of Education has indicated that certain stage points are planned and that a “more extensive deployment” may be considered depending on the results even if it is “still too early“to consider it. “We will know more in the fall of 2021.”
