With the takeover of Tanker.io, Doctolib wants to “establish a new standard of medical secrecy”

The partnership concluded in 2019 between Doctolib and Tanker.io is taking the next step. Doctolib has just announced the takeover of Tanker for an undisclosed amount.

The French start-up Tanker specializes in the development of data encryption solutions. Doctolib and Tanker had already worked together in 2019 to implement an end-to-end encryption system on the appointment booking platform offered by Doctolib.

This acquisition is part of the continuity of the partnership: Doctolib thus indicates that it will allow the continued deployment of Tanker’s solutions and that “end-to-end encryption will continue to be implemented in all the services developed by Doctolib in order to secure personal health data.

“Redefining medical secrecy online”

Among the other objectives envisaged by the two companies as part of this merger, the development of new technologies related to encryption will also be on the agenda. The final objective stated by Doctolib is to succeed in “redefining online medical secrecy” while providing users with the highest level of security.

In its press release, Doctolib thus indicates that “the new Doctolib teams are already investing in cutting-edge technologies such as secure enclaves and homomorphic encryption, in order to create new advanced and secure functionalities for patients and staff. health “.

Homomorphic encryption and secure enclaves are two avenues being considered by the industry to allow manipulation of encrypted data, without requiring decryption of the data. These techniques are gradually coming out of research laboratories and several companies are now trying to develop them in order to offer them to companies.

Leverage data while protecting it

The medical sector is particularly interested in this type of technology, which could enable it to process medical data while maintaining data confidentiality.

Doctolib nevertheless recalls that its economic model is not based on the monetization of data or the display of advertisements, but on a subscription paid by the health establishments which use their solution.

But the site has become in recent years a major player in the world of health and has a considerable amount of health data. It is therefore not surprising that the company has its engineers working on ways to exploit this data while guaranteeing its confidentiality.
