A keyboard for iPad, so far, nothing out of the ordinary. However, this accessory has the effect of modifying the user interface of the Tablet at the apple.
An Apple-signed patent for an iPad keyboard has been referenced on Patently Apple. You will see it through the visuals, the device is a little more sophisticated than a simple Magic Keyboard. Above all, it transforms the user interface of the iPad to bring it closer to that of macOS.
From iPadOS to macOS thanks to a new keyboard
Strict warning: all the patents filed do not systematically materialize by marketed products, especially at Apple.
Still, the concept that is reflected in the patent of the day would certainly appeal to some users. It illustrates an iPad attaching to a keyboard with a hinge. This assembly has the effect of transforming the iPadOS interface into something that looks a lot like macOS.
Given the details in the illustrations, it is understood that this macOS interface, or at least “macOS-like is the crucial element of this combination.
For iPad users, this keyboard would enrich the possibilities of the tablet by offering more flexibility through various modes of use. In addition, the patent suggests that the hinge could be used to connect additional accessories, such as a video projector.
Apple more resistant to hybridization?
So far, Apple has always refused to market a hybrid device. In 2018, Tim Cook declared that the company’s philosophy was not geared towards this type of product. The CEO of Apple said clearly that he did not imagine a convergence between a MacBook and an iPad. This patent suggests that the apple brand could review its position in the future.
By the way, about the interface, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg recently argued that Apple was working on an iPadOS Pro concept allowing three modes. The first would be a standard touch mode similar to the one currently in vogue. The second, designed for the use of an Apple Pencil, would optimize the interface for this accessory. Finally, a third “Pro” mode would be triggered when using a keyboard or an external screen.
