Withdrawal of the Russian contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh

April 17 (Reuters) – The Kremlin announced on Wednesday that Russian peacekeepers deployed in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a former separatist enclave reconquered by Azerbaijan last September and emptied of its Armenian inhabitants, had begun to withdraw.

Moscow deployed nearly 2,000 troops to the region in November 2020 as part of a deal ending armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Karabakh separatist forces.

The enclave was recaptured by Baku troops in September 2023 without intervention by the Russian contingent. (Reuters Bureau, Jean-Stéphane Brosse for the French version, edited by Blandine Hénault)
