With its ScanWatch Horizon, Withings offers a fantastically designed, high-quality smartwatch packed with great health features. The latter allows you to take advantage of clinically validated medical technology, and 24/7 monitoring, while wearing a luxury watch on your wrist.

The watch comes with a stainless steel strap fitted to the watch. The blue or green color appears on the bezel, watch face, and fluoroelastomer strap. In the box of the watch are the stainless steel bracelet and the fluoroelastomer bracelet, a loading puck, a metal hammer, a punch, a bracelet holder and three additional links for the metal bracelet.

The bezel features laser-etched markings for the diver’s mounts, and the bezel even rotates counter-clockwise, allowing it to be used as a diver’s watch as well. The face of the watch is covered with a flat sapphire crystal that fits perfectly with the rotating bezel. The hollow luminova hands light up in the dark, as do the five-minute indicators.

A host of features

Centered in the top half of the watch face, a small round PMOLED display shows digital time, date, notifications, heart rate, SpO2 readings, EKG, steps, floors climbed, distance traveled, calories, workouts, work of breathing, weekly Strava distance, and metrics. Clock options also include an alarm, stopwatch and timer.

The watch has only one button on the right side, in the center of the watch, which also serves as a digital crown that rotates to scroll through the small digital display. Simply press the crown to select an option and hold the crown down to access another setting. The watch case is made of stainless steel, and on the back there are three charging pins, the second and third ECG electrodes, and three openings for the multi-wavelength PPG sensor. The first ECG electrode is located around the bezel of the watch.

To activate the echocardiogram or SpO2 measurement, select the applicable option on the digital display, then place your fingers on the right side of the watch and on the bezel. Stand still for 30 seconds and watch the countdown on the watch as the measurement is taken. The ScanWatch Horizon will vibrate when the measurement is complete, then the smartphone app will show you the results.

Your ScanWatch can also be used to perform respiratory scans while you sleep using the PPG sensor and accelerometer. This data can be shared with your doctor and, if any disturbances are recorded, can help diagnose issues like sleep apnea. Respiratory scanners can be permanently on, automatic (three nights in a row once per quarter) or off. Turning it on all the time will impact your battery life.

Cheaper than other dive watches

The metal band has two quick-release pins on each end, which attach to the watch case. The fluoroelastomer strap features a single quick-release pin on each end. Both securely attach the straps to the watch case. Compared to the ScanWatch, the ScanWatch Horizon is twice as waterproof. The other technical characteristics and functionalities are the same between the two watches.

Suffice it to say, we’re fans of the original ScanWatch, launched last fall. The ScanWatch Horizon builds on that solid foundation with a watch that adds class and style to your wrist. The watch is not too big so it can be comfortably worn in bed to track your sleep details. The ScanWatch Horizon subtly delivers key health and fitness information to the small screen, only when you want to see it.

The time is permanently displayed, as on a standard watch. The 30-day battery life is also a major advantage over a smartwatch or GPS sports watch, allowing it to be worn all the time. Withings continues to excel in the hybrid watch category, as proven by the ScanWatch Horizon. This smartwatch clearly targets those who want a watch with a more sophisticated look and feel. Although it’s on the pricey side for a fitness tracker, it’s cheaper than many standard dive watches, so the price isn’t necessarily a deterrent to those looking for this type of watch.
