Withings U-Scan is presented as a connected urine analysis laboratory, which must be placed in the toilet bowl. Depending on the type of cartridge used, this device is either able to predict menstrual cycles or provide you with a metabolic guide to your hydration and nutrition.
The French company Withings, known and recognized for its expertise in connected health, revealed during CES 2023 a brand new connected device called Withings U-Scan. This device has been designed to analyze your urine using a series of sensors and patented technologies.
In total, it took four years of development to complete this project. Project in which diagnostic experts participated in vitrourologists, nephrologists and gynecologists, in order to obtain the most optimal results according to a whole lot of data to take into account.
User identification
More concretely, Withings U-Scan relies on two types of cartridges to provide analyses: the U-Scan Cycle Syn cartridge, for monitoring and synchronizing the menstrual cycle of women; and the U-Scan Nutri Balance cartridge, which focuses on your hydration and nutrition.
This device takes the form of a 90 mm roller that you place like a deodorizing block. During your needs, the urine then flows to a collection point, from which a pump is activated “when the thermal sensor detects the presence of urine, which initiates the fluidic delivery of a sample through a circuitยป, Explains Withings.
Once this collection process is complete, the urine continues its way into a test capsule, where the chemical reaction is read by an optical sensor. Where U-Scan is strong is that it is then able to know who owns the urine in question. The tricolor firm describes this little sleight of hand:
Low-energy radar sensors built into the reader measure multiple variables to identify an individual’s unique urine stream signature, detecting its speed, distance and dispersion. Credentials are confirmed in the app.
Three months of measurements
Once the analysis is done, the results are sent via Wi-Fi. The cartridge rotates slightly to expose the next test capsule at the injection site, in order to carry out another analysis later. Note that one cartridge is capable of providing up to three months of measurements. After this period, it is necessary to interchange it.
All results automatically sync with the Health Mate mobile app. It is on this application that you can consult all the data analyzed on a daily basis. Note that U-Scan is designed to differentiate between urine and third party fluids.
The U-Scan Cycle Sync cartridge helps track and predict menstrual cycles, and also determines the ovulation window based on several factors:
- Hormonal detection;
- Biomarkers of hydration and nutrition;
- Specific gravity of urine;
- pH levels.
The U-Scan Nutri Balance cartridge, on the other hand, displays an analysis of urine specific gravity, pH, vitamin C and ketone levels. The goal: to helpusers to monitor their metabolic intake to optimize their daily hydration and nutrients“.
Withings U-Scan: price and release date
The app even has the luxury of recommending workout sequences, dietary information, and recipes for achieving goals.
Only launched in Europe in the second quarter of 2023, U-Scan will be supplied as standard with a cartridge of your choice, for the sum of 499.95 euros. Subscribing to an automatic refill will also be possible to receive a new cartridge every three months.
