The Nintendo Wii and DSi eShops have not been available for several days. Players are now very worried: are the stores coming back? Meanwhile, there is no answer from Nintendo. Let’s take a closer look at why this is a problem for console owners.
Nintendo eShops for Wii and DSi are down
The two consoles Wii and DSi are certainly among the older consoles from Nintendo that are no longer used on a large scale. Still, the current status of eShops comes as quite a surprise to owners of these devices. Then since March 16th are both disconnected from the Nintendo network (Source: Kotaku).
And that without any explanation from the publisher. The fact that old consoles no longer receive support at some point is a fairly normal process, but actually a final shutdown is communicated again beforehand. Not in this case.
Just a few weeks ago, for example, Nintendo had about the Shutdown of Wii U and 3DS informed. This gave the players a lead time of several months to prepare for this:
So far it is not yet clear whether it is one technical error and the shops may come online again. In this case, Nintendo would certainly have spoken out. And so far there has been radio silence.
What’s wrong with the shut down eShops?
Since 2017, DSi owners have not been able to purchase games in the online shop. The bulkheads for new purchases have also been tight in the Wii Shop since 2019. Still, it was for that re-downloading previously purchased games important that the consoles are still connected to the network. This is not the case now and, unless Nintendo fixes it, will not be in the future.
Just at valuable game gems of the two systems that are incredibly difficult to obtain physical copies of, the sudden shutdown is a major disaster. So if you couldn’t get yourself a download of your favorite digital game, you’re going to have to look into the tube now.
