Wizards of the Coast Reveals What’s Coming to Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering

During an online event that took place on August 18, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the next news and announcements regarding its two favorite licenses: Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

Dungeons & Dragons

Role-players will have plenty to eat and drink during 2022 and beyond as the announcements around the famous franchise of tabletop role-playing games have been linked with two nice surprises in particular: D&D Beyond and One D&D. D&D Beyond is a platform that allows you to play everywhere and in a more immersive way. You will be able to find all the contents of the books in digital versions but also your characters and all the information necessary for the smooth running of your games, this includes the dice rolls. Thanks to a 3D tool under development, you will also be able to bring your campaigns to life virtually with a dedicated graphics engine running under Unreal Engine.

One D&D is a novelty intended to attract a new generation of players who would like to embark on the Dungeons & Dragons adventure. It is a codename of the next generation of the role-playing game which incorporates updated rules and backwards compatible with the fifth edition of the game. You can now go to DnDBeyond.com to register and participate in the public tests from One D&D.

The incorporation of D&D Beyond will also be done with the next adventure of the license: Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen. A pack with the physical and digital versions of Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen (standard and Deluxe) will be offered to fans so that they always have the choice between the two ways to play. Pre-orders are open on dndstore.wizards.com and will allow early access to the adventure on D&D Beyond from November 22, 2022.

Magic: The Gathering

The famous card game reveals some great things to come for the license, including long-awaited collaborations that finally shine. A news has just been announced since Doctor Who, the famous BBC science fiction series, will also be there. With Universes Beyond, players will therefore be able to own cards from illustrious franchises:

  • Warhammer 40000 : On the program we have four Commander decks, four Solar Rings with the theme of each faction representing the Forces of the Imperium, the Tyranid Swarm, the Necron Dynasties and the Ruinous Powers. Collector’s Edition cards in every Commander deck get a unique Foil treatment.
  • The Lord of the Rings : During the third quarter of 2023, it will be possible to rediscover many iconic characters and scenes from Middle-earth thanks to this collaboration with Tolkien’s work. In particular, we can collect 18 cards forming a work illustrating the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, the greatest battle of the War of the Ring in Minas Tirith.
  • Doctor Who : This collaboration will offer Commander decks, collectible boosters and Secret Lair cards in the colors of the famous Gallifrey traveler and his many forms.

In addition to collaborations, Magic will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023. and Wizard of the Coast is preparing some nice things for us for this very special year. The year-round festivities kick off as early as 2022 and include the Magic 30 event to be held at EXPO Las Vegas at the World Market Center from October 28-30.

The roadmap is thus already drawn until 2024 with some returns in the past for the veterans thanks to the expansion Dominaria United, a plane of existence of the first Magic game released in 1993. For the rest, we therefore go : The Phyrexia story arc continues with The Brotherhood War, which will be available in November, followed by Phyrexia: All Will Be One, which will be released in the first quarter of 2023, and which will end with March of the Machine, the conclusion of the story, in Q2 2023. March of the Machine: The Aftermath, also releasing in Q2 2023, will wrap up March of the Machine and explore the fundamental changes that have taken place in Magic’s multiverse. In Q3 2023, players will return to Eldraine, the fan-favorite universe inspired by classic fairy tales, with Wilds of Eldraine. The year 2023 will end in its fourth quarter with the release of Lost Caverns of Ixalan where pirates, dinosaurs and vampires will fight for power.
