A 33-year-old woman has just been sentenced to 18 months in prison after abandoning her children for a week. Four children she no longer wanted to take care of to “turn the page.”
Angèle, a 35-year-old young woman, has just been sentenced to 18 months in prison, nine of which are suspended under an electronic bracelet. This Lille resident is accused of having abandoned his four minor children for a week to go on vacation. In 2018, Angèle is 28 years old, and she is already the mother of four children. Three girls aged 10, 11 and 13, and a little boy aged 6. She has just chased away the father of her children, an alcoholic who beat her. The latter died some time later. She had then already met another man, with whom she had fallen in love. She then makes an astonishing choice: to hide the existence of her four children from him.
When her new partner offers her a one-week vacation trip to Tunisia, she decides to go there, leaving her children alone in their apartment. After this event, social services are contacted. The young woman tells them, as her words are relayed by our colleagues from the Voice of the North what “don’t want any more of (his) children.” She adds : “I want to live my life with my new husband (…) I turned the page.” Shocking words for the children, who still suffer today from trauma linked to this abandonment and the ill-treatment they suffered at home.

The months preceding their mother’s departure on vacation were not easy. Placed in a foster family, the children’s tongues loosen, and they testify to ill-treatment on a daily basis. Abuse that would have started after the death of their father. They say that their mother hit them with a basketball, or that she pulled their hair. They also explain that she did not feed them their fill. The defense of the mother of the family will earn her a dark look from her daughters in court: “I was no longer doing with the children. My ex-companion had left me debts”
In the courtroom, only his three eldest were present. The youngest did not want to come.
