Trainee salaries in Germany vary by several hundred euros, depending on the profession. But the size of the company also plays a role. On average, an apprenticeship is remunerated with 1057 euros per month. Apprentices in artistic professions earn particularly little.

Apprentices in Germany earned an average of EUR 1,057 gross per month last year. Earnings for women were slightly higher at EUR 1,101 than for men (EUR 1,022), as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. In addition to the profession, the amount of remuneration also depends on the size of the training company.

Companies with fewer than ten employees paid an average gross monthly salary of 828 euros. Trainees in companies with 50 to 99 employees received 944 euros. Companies with at least 1000 employees even paid 1253 euros.

According to the information, trainees earned an above-average amount in health and care professions: Their monthly earnings were on average 1139 euros gross. Training in aviation and shipping professions, such as air traffic controllers or shipbuilders, was also highly remunerated at 1054 and 1051 euros. Trainees earned 901 euros in handicrafts.

Many trainees still live with their parents

“In 2022, trainees in artistic professions received the lowest remuneration,” it said. Apprentices in areas such as music, photography or graphic design earned an average gross monthly salary of 783 euros.

Since 2020, there has been a minimum training allowance for newly concluded training contracts in companies without a collective agreement, which is adjusted annually. Apprentices who started their training last year received a gross salary of at least 585 euros per month in the first year. At the beginning of the training this year, it will be at least 620 euros per month.

Many trainees still live with their parents during their training. “Financial reasons should also play a role in this decision,” said the Federal Office. According to the first results of the 2022 microcensus, a good two-thirds of the approximately 1.5 million trainees who received training allowance were still living with their parents. There are clear differences between the sexes: almost three quarters (73 percent) of the male trainees still lived in their parents’ household during their training period, while the figure for the female trainees was 59 percent.
