Women became witnesses – Suddenly bright: fireball hissed over Tyrol

A mysterious light phenomenon suddenly in the night sky! A large fireball caused a stir in Tyrol at the weekend. Two night owls from Münster witnessed the natural spectacle, which can only be seen around 30 times a year on average across Central Europe. “It was kind of spooky.”

Shooting stars are probably nothing special for frequent party animals. The brighter meteors, so-called fireballs, only occur very rarely. “It’s kind of cool that we’ve seen and experienced such a phenomenon,” says Sabrina Zeller of “Krone”. “At first we thought of a rocket.” The 33-year-old woman from Münster was with her friend Katrin on Saturday night De Benedetto was on his way home from Kramsach after a joint visit to a restaurant when suddenly the universe flexed its muscles and the two women from the Unterland couldn’t believe their eyes. “It was about ten minutes past midnight. Suddenly a neon green ball – about the size of the moon – appeared in the sky and disappeared again after a few seconds. A kind of tail was attached,” Zeller recalls. At first, the two women thought of a rocket. “We then drove on more slowly and looked to see if we could see anything lying on the fields. But there was nothing,” the 33-year-old clarifies. The illuminated ball almost caused a sleepless night. “Of course we thought about what that was and then came across the fireball phenomenon on the Internet,” the two Tyroleans finally found what they were looking for. “It was a bit foggy at night and therefore almost scary,” laughs Zeller. Photographer in Upper Austria managed to take a spectacular photoErwin Filimon from the Salzkammergut Astronomical Working Group at the Gahberg Observatory, confirms the fireball sighting. “Hermann Koberger, a member of ours, was able to take a photo of it in Fornach in Upper Austria.” It was not known at the time whether fragments from the meteor had reached the ground.
