Women’s 200m in Eugene – Kambundji in 8th place – Jackson with fabulous time to gold – Sport

  • Mujinga Kambundji sprints to 8th place in the 200m World Championships final.
  • In 22.55 seconds, the woman from Bern stays half a second above her Swiss record.
  • Gold goes to Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, who runs the second fastest time in history in 21.45.

Mujinga Kambundji couldn’t beat anyone in the 200m final. On lane 1, which she does not prefer, the 30-year-old was only 8th in 22.55 seconds.

In terms of time, the Bernerin remained below her possibilities, and clearly. In the semifinals she set a new Swiss record of 22.05. In the pre-run she ran faster than in the final with a time of 22.34.

To win bronze, Kambundji would have had to beat their Swiss record from the semifinals again. Contrary to expectations, however, a 21st time would not have been necessary. British title holder Dina Asher-Smith secured third place in 22.02.

Jackson scratches the “Flo-Jo” record

Gold and silver went to Jamaica. Shericka Jackson set an absolutely fabulous time on her way to her first individual gold medal at a World Championships. In 21.45, the 28-year-old ran the second fastest time in history. Jackson was just 11/100th below Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 1988 record, long thought unattainable.

The silver medal went to 100m world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who also stayed under the 22-second mark in 21.81. Fraser-Pryce and Jackson swapped places compared to the 100m final. In the supreme discipline, Jackson had to admit defeat to her 35-year-old compatriot.

Elaine Thompson-Herah, who completed the Jamaican podium in the 100m, went away empty-handed. The Olympic champion from Tokyo took 7th place.
