Women’s Tour de France: how much did Annemiek van Vleuten earn after her victory?

Big winner of the women’s Tour de France, which took place from July 24 to 31, 2022, the Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten will receive a nice check for her victory, far from the amount pocketed by her male counterpart.

After a long absence that lasted no less than 33 years, the Women’s Tour de France made its big comeback in 2022, just after the end of the men’s Tour de France. Organized from Sunday July 24 to Sunday July 31, 2022, this event, including the journalist Marion Rousse was the director, was a pretty popular success with the public. While Jonas Vingegaard won the men’s edition of the Tour de France this year, it was the Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten who won for the big comeback of the women’s edition, allowing him to win a nice check. In concrete terms, the women’s Tour de France, which consisted of 8 stages, compared to 21 for men, enjoyed a total prize money of 247,530 euros.

On his side, the men’s Tour de France prize money was much higher, with 2,282,000 euros. By winning the female version of La Grande Boucle, Annemiek van Vleuten received the sum of 50,000 euros. In addition, she also won 8,000 euros for his two stage victories (4,000 euros per stage), 1,500 euros for her second place in the mountain classification, 500 euros for having been elected the most combative of the 7th stage, and finally 100 euros for her day spent in yellow on Sunday, a little over 60,000 euros in total. A great reward for the cyclist, even if it is a derisory amount compared to the jackpot won by her male counterpart.

Tour de France: a big pay gap between the men’s edition and the women’s edition

In effect, by winning the Tour de France 2022Jonas Vingegaard pocketed the sum of 500,000 euros. In addition, stage victories are also more generously rewarded in the men’s Tour de France, since each cyclist who crossed the line first received 11,000 euros. However, the previously announced sums do not fall directly into the pockets of the runners. In fact, the bonuses collected are divided by each team between the cyclists and the staff. A rule that applies to the Tour de France for men, but also for women. As a reminder, a controversy broke out in 2021 on the amount 23 times lower received by the winner of Paris-Roubaix, Lizzie Deignan, compared to Sonny Colbrelli for men.
