Wonder Woman 1984 is coming to Netflix for the first time on February 18th. However, what will happen to Warner’s “Wonder Woman” brand in the future is uncertain, aside from vague assurances.

“Wonder Woman 1984” was unlucky to want to start in the cinemas in the middle of the Corona period. Several postponements were the result until December 2020. Although the DC film did not even bring in its production budget at the box office, it blossomed into a considerable success thanks to the simultaneous start of streaming on HBO Max. In Germany, “Wonder Woman 1984” in February 2021 exclusively for Sky Cinema and Sky Ticket (later theatrical release: June 17, 2021). Today the DC spectacle comes to Netflix.

“Wonder Woman 1984”: cinema flop, but streaming hit

Warner’s first “Wonder Woman” film (2017) is set in World War I. In “Wonder Woman 1984” the story has meanwhile arrived in the Cold War – together with the threat of nuclear annihilation. Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) disguises herself as an art dealer in civil society. But the British scientist Barbara Ann Minerva (Kristen Wiig) is transformed in the course of a ritual into the villain Cheetah, which brings Wonder Woman on the scene. The telepathic ex-soldier Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) also causes a lot of trouble.

The sequel to “Wonder Woman 1984” is currently on hold

Chris Pine is also back in Wonder Woman 1984. Patty Jenkins was in the director’s chair again, and this time, unlike in the first “Wonder Woman” film, she also co-wrote the screenplay. The future of a third “Wonder Woman” film is still uncertain. James Gunn, one of the new DCU bosses, has pledged that actress Gal Gadot will remain part of Warner’s DC Universe. When and if a third “Wonder Woman” film is being worked on is currently unclear.
