Woody Allen: before retirement, a last film shot in Paris

In an interview with the Journal du Dimanche, Woody Allen talked about his next (and last?) film: a thriller shot in Paris in French.

On the occasion of the promotion of his new film Rifkin’s Festival in theaters on July 13, Woody Allen spoke with The Sunday newspaper about his next and possible last feature film.

The director recently mentioned the possibility of retiring as a director, during a live Instagram with Alec Baldwin. He said there: “I will probably make another film. I must admit that most of my feelings have disappeared. I no longer have those chills that I used to feel“.

And his last film precisely, should take place in Paris with an entirely French cast. The filmmaker specifies that he has already found the main actors (without giving more details) for this thriller, the filming of which is due to begin in September.

A French “Match Point”

He declares to JDD: “I’m moving to Paris in September, for a two-year-old project postponed because of the Covid. This will be my 50th feature film. I found the financing in the United States, but the cast is entirely French and the film will be played in your language.”

Allen then clarifies “The story will be in the vein of Match Point: a kind of amorous and poisonous thriller. I have excellent memories of the filming of Minuit à Paris, in 2010. I really like this city and I came often, discovering magical places each time..”

“No one can stop me from writing”

Since 2018, Woody Allen has been in turmoil after accusations of sexual assault by his adopted daughter. In the wake of the MeToo movement, Hollywood turned its back on him and the filmmaker found it much more difficult to set up his projects.

Questioned on this subject by the JDD, the director of Annie Hall declares “I am an author and no one can prevent me from writing, and therefore from working. It is the guarantee of my freedom and my independence.” If Woody Allen ends his career as a director, he should therefore continue to write for others.

They fall under the spell of the event, of Spain and of the magic that emanates from the films. The wife has an affair with a brilliant French director while her husband falls in love with a beautiful Spaniard.
