Woody Allen: Marriage to Soon-Yi Previn "changed" the director

In the beginning, the relationship between Woody Allen (84, "Midnight in Paris") and Soon-Yi Previn caused a tangible scandal. The reason: the 49-year-old is the adopted daughter of the director and his ex-wife Mia Farrow (75, "Rosemary's Baby"), the two are 35 years apart. In the meantime, Allen and Previn have been happily married for more than 22 years and are themselves parents of the daughters Bechet (21) and Manzie (20). The filmmaker spoke to the British "Mail on Sunday" about his unusual marriage, which he "changed" in his own words.

"It didn't make sense when our relationship started," Woody Allen admitted. Superficially, the two did not fit together, the director was "much older", his partner "an adopted child". For outsiders, it looked like Allen was using Previn "as an older man on a rampage," the Hollywood veteran went on to say, but emphasizing, "It never was."

They agree on important things

Since the "A Rainy Day in New York" filmmaker officially made his adopted daughter his wife in 1997, he has become "calmer" and has lost some of his "neurotic properties". But: "I still don't go through tunnels and I don't like narrow spaces or elevators." Allen and Soon-Yi Previn's marriage works according to the director because the couple agree on important things. This includes, for example, "how to raise children, where we want to live (and) how to deal with each other," said the 84-year-old.

His wife, 35 years his junior, still keeps Woody Allen, who also has the children Moses (42), Dylan (34) and Ronan (32) with ex-wife Mia Farrow, busy and "changed" him in the course of their relationship. "It makes us go out four or five times a week," he told the British paper. Soon-Yi likes to be with people, he also enjoys it himself.

"Great drama for the tabloids"

In the interview, Woody Allen also spoke about the allegations of sexual abuse his daughter Dylan made against him in 2014 and 2017. The director emphasized that he did not want to be tortured by them. "It was a false accusation, but a great drama for the tabloids." Instead of dealing with the subject, Allen simply does not read the relevant reports. "I live my life. I work. I play jazz. I watch sports. I meet up with friends," he said.

The alleged abuse of 34-year-old Dylan O'Sullivan Farrow – the sister of Allen's current wife Soon-Yi Previn – first came to light in 1992. At that time, the "Blue Jasmine" director was parting with Dylan's mother, actress Mia Farrow. Allen was never officially charged, though the Connecticut state attorney said there was reason to suspect a crime.
