“Workers with disabilities are perceived with a compassionate and utilitarian vision by employers”

Ln November 17, 2022, the annual DuoDay was held. A French initiative, it allows a person with a disability to share their daily life with an able-bodied person during a working day. The 2022 session was a real success: companies and administrations showed rare and encouraging enthusiasm. The DuoDay offers the opportunity for a spotlight, even a communication coup.

The recruitment of workers or job seekers with disabilities cannot, however, be used as a means of buying a good conscience or of limiting the payment of penalties to dedicated funds such as the Fund for the integration of disabled people into the (FIPHFP) or the Association managing the fund for the professional integration of disabled people (Agefiph).

Too often workers with disabilities are still perceived with a compassionate and utilitarian vision by employers and recruiters. Endowed with diplomas, training and experience comparable to those of the able-bodied, from the same schools as the able-bodied or from specialized schools allowing them to acquire the compensation necessary for daily life, people with disabilities nevertheless suffer from discrimination in hiring, access to continuing education and career development.

Disabled people need a union to defend themselves

The unemployment rate of people with disabilities is thus twice that of the population as a whole, to settle at 14%, according to Agefiph. And, for certain situations of disability, such as for the visually impaired, this rate climbs to 50%, according to the Federation of the Blind. According to the Defender of Rights, disability is, for our country, the first ground of discrimination in 2021and this for five consecutive years.

This sad record calls for a leap to give workers and professionals with disabilities a voice in social dialogue at the same height as their colleagues. To make heard the specificity of hiring these disabled workers and defend their interests in the world of work, associative action is no longer enough. It must find an outlet in union action!

This December 3, 2022, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, marks the launch of the National Union of Persons with Disabilities (SNPH). This union aims to defend the rights of working people with disabilities, to advocate for an inclusive work environment while raising awareness among employers and the general public. We also want to promote the retention in employment of people directly or indirectly confronted with a disability during their career and fight against imposed disability.
