World Championship bronze game in Brampton – Krizova ends Swiss women’s dreams of a medal – Sport

  • The Swiss ice hockey women’s national team lost the game for third place at the World Championships in Brampton (CAN) against the Czech Republic 2:3.
  • Czech Republic’s Denisa Krizova shines with 2 goals and an assist.
  • This is the third time in a row that the Swiss have finished fourth at a World Cup.

With eleven and a half minutes left to play, the Swiss had an excellent opportunity to catch up from the 2:3 deficit. After 2 unnecessary checks, penalties were imposed on the Czechs – Switzerland was allowed to play 5-on-3 for a good one and a half minutes.

Coach Colin Muller’s team was able to install itself in the opposing third. But nothing that could be counted came out. The Czechs defended well and passionately, but they also threw themselves into 2 shot attempts.

The final third was generally flawed and not very eventful. Only 11 shots were recorded including the final offensive, the ratio was 8:3 for the Eastern Europeans. Of course, that suited the Czech Republic – it was able to save the 3:2 lead over time and thus defend the bronze medal at the World Cup.

Swiss women highly efficient

The Swiss women actually shone with efficiency. They took the lead through Lara Stalder (12′). It was only the 2nd shot fired, the Czech Republic had even shot 8 times on target. The 9th sat, however: Denisa Krizova was successful 31 seconds after the Swiss lead.

Krizova was the offensive woman of the game: she provided the preliminary work for Michaela Pejzlova’s 2-1 lead (15′), and she again scored the 3rd Czech goal herself (38′). In between, Lena-Marie Lutz equalized to make it 2-2 (29th). Her conclusion was the 5th shot fired by the Swiss women.

Again tears in the bronze game

The Swiss were visibly disappointed after the defeat, some of them shedding bitter tears. They were close to an upset, but the defeat was deserved given the game shares. The shot ratios of the various thirds were 3:18, 7:7 and 3:8 – Captain Stalder’s team was only able to keep up in the middle section.

The disappointment should also be great because many players lost a bronze game for the 4th time in a row. At the World Championships in 2021, 2022 and this year, as well as at the 2022 Olympics. By the way, it worked once in the past with bronze: 2012 at the World Cup and 2014 at the Olympic Games.

Legend:

Voted best Swiss player of the match…

…but Shannon Sigrist wasn’t in the mood to celebrate that day.
