World Cup 2022: after the German fiasco, Oliver Bierhoff leaves the staff of the selection

Oliver Bierhoff is no longer the general manager of the German football association. After the failure of the Nationalmannschaft, eliminated in the first round of the World Cup in Qatar, the former striker, in office since January 1, 2018, was dismissed. “Oliver Bierhoff and the DFB have agreed today to terminate his contract which ran until 2024”, explained the Federation in a press release published in the evening.

“Football has permeated my life and will continue to accompany me. It has been an honor to have been able to work for German football for so long. This frees the way for new directions,” Bierhoff wrote in the statement.

Second fiasco

After a pitiful exit in the 1st round of the 2018 World Cup in Russia when it was defending champion, Germany was eliminated at the same stage of the competition in Qatar in 2022, after a defeat against Japan (2- 1), a draw against Spain (1-1) and a victory against Costa Rica (4-2).

In the aftermath of the debacle, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf refused to give Oliver Bierhoff and coach Hansi Flick a blank check, asking them for an analysis of failures since 2018. Bierhoff is thus the first to pay for this disillusionment.

Germany, accustomed to the last four of major competitions in the past, remains on three resounding failures, not reaching the quarter-finals three times in a row, a first in its history. In 18 months, in the summer of 2024, Germany will host the European Championship, with the aim of regaining a place among the continent’s elite. Bierhoff had been part of the German staff since 2004, in different roles, working alongside Jürgen Klinsmann (2004-2006), Joachim Löw (2006-2021) and Hansi Flick (2021-2022).
