World Cup at Lake Achensee – Sailing Club Mattsee on course for overall victory

The German Sailing League made a guest appearance at Lake Achensee last weekend. The conditions at the races were very autumnal, which was not an easy task for the participants. In the end, the Mattsee Sailing Club was able to take second place.

The Austrian Sailing League moved to the Achensee in western Austria for the third league event. Autumnal conditions provided a lot of variety in terms of precipitation and wind direction. The weekend was correspondingly difficult for the 18 sailing teams. The field of six identical J-70 boats, which the teams rotate through, was sometimes extremely close together, sometimes there were large distances due to the tricky wind conditions. Thus, the favorites who had traveled to the overall victory first had to lose a few feathers this weekend, including the Union Yachtclub Mattsee in 3rd place and UYC Attersee in 2nd place. The Mattsee Sailing Club, which came to Lake Achensee as the overall leader, only found itself in 7th place after day 2, but on the last day it was still catching up.Strong final sprintThe Bregenz Sailing Club around helmsman Klaus Diem coped best with the winds on Lake Achensee, who which Bregenzer confidently steered to 1st place (17 points). The Mattsee Sailing Club, this time represented by Leopold Fricke at the helm, showed constant performance again on the third day and only moved up to second place in the last race (23 points). The Nautic Club Austria took third place (23 points). How close the third league event was was shown by the small 2-point difference between place 2 and place 8. Has the decision for overall victory in the Austrian Sailing League been made yet? Well that will be the final from 8th-10th. Show September at Wolfgangsee. The Mattsee Sailing Club will start there again with Stefan Scharnagel, who knows the area like the back of his hand. Despite the excellent signs and the lead of 18.5 points for the finale, the team from the Mattsee Sailing Club was still very cautious: “Of course things are looking very good now, but the accounts will be settled at the end. The weekend at Lake Achensee showed how quickly things can go backwards. We remain fully focused and look forward to an exciting finale at Lake Wolfgang,” says Bernhard Ziegler from the SCM.
