The “maple leaves” can become world champions for the 28th time on Sunday, and that in Finland against Finland

World-class ice hockey is inevitable: On Sunday evening, hosts Finland and Canada will battle it out for the ice hockey world champions in Tampere. In the 6th meeting in a World Cup final – Canada has won 4 times to date – the “Ahornblatt” are aiming for their 28th title. A win would be tantamount to the sole title record, yet the Canadians share that mark with the Russians, who are absent this year.

You can watch the World Cup final between hosts Finland and Canada live from 7 p.m. on SRF Zwei and in the SRF Sport App.

Canada is by no means the clear favorite for the ice hockey crown, and yet a win would be the end of an impressive run:

  • preliminary round: Having started as favorites in Group A, the Canadians have to make do with third place – they lose out against Switzerland and Denmark.
  • Quarterfinals: Trailing 3-1 to Sweden by the 59th minute, Canada forced extra time. Drake Batherson saves his team after just 43 seconds.
  • semi-final: The rescue in extremis is followed by the demonstration of power against the Czech Republic. With 3 goals within 3 minutes, Canada increased to 4:1, 2 more goals to make it 6:1 are just an encore.

When it comes to «dirty goals» already world champion

A particular strength of Canadian ice hockey was once again impressive against the Czechs: The North Americans scored the first 3 goals from close range, Dylan Cozens (1:1) and Chad Johnson (3:1) each reacted to a rebound with lightning speed – one Weapon that could also be a means of success against the Finns.

Compared to their opponents in the final, Finland has been riding the wave of success since the beginning of the tournament, with 19 out of a possible 21 points they left the strong competition in the group behind. In the quarterfinals and semifinals they beat Slovakia (4:2) and the USA (4:3) with convincing team morale.

However, the Canadians will not only face a highly motivated Finnish team, but also an audience completely bathed in «Suomi-White-Blue». Sole title record or frenetic home party? You can find out live on SRF.
