Qatar will introduce a shuttle system by plane for supporters from neighboring countries who will come to watch the matches of the World Cup, scheduled from November 20 to December 18. A new environmental controversy, for an edition of the Mondial already criticized on this subject.

More than 160 flights per day are planned. For the 2022 World Cup, Qatar, which is the host country of the competition, will set up a plane shuttle system for supporters from neighboring countries who will come to watch the matches, according to information from The Obs. A new environmental controversy, for an edition of the World Cup already criticized on this subject due in particular to the air conditioning installed in its stadiums.

Round trips available for $258 in economy class

Around 1.2 million fans are expected in the small Gulf emirate between November 20 and December 18. And these spectators will not all be able to find accommodation on site because the accommodation offer is limited there. This is why Qatar has established partnerships with its neighbors for more than 160 daily flights, or approximately one plane every ten minutes. Fans will then be able to stay outside the country, and go there on match days. These round-trip flights are available from $258 in economy class, reports The Obs.

However, the Emirate had promised “the first carbon-neutral World Cup in the history of the event” by using renewable energies in particular for its sports facilities. “The carbon neutrality put forward by the organizers is not a response to the climate emergency and must be considered as greenwashing,” said Jean-François Julliard, director general of Greenpeace, to the magazine.

A FIFA report published in 2021 estimated that this 2022 World Cup would produce up to 3.6 million tonnes of CO2.
