Brazilian football legend Mario Zagallo died on Friday at the age of 92.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of our all-time four-time world champion Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo,” said a statement on his official Instagram account. After Pelé’s death at the end of 2022, Zagallo was the last living member of the Brazilian team that won the Seleçao’s first World Cup title in 1958.
Zagallo will forever be the first to win the World Cup as a player and later as a coach, establishing himself as one of the great figures in World Cup history. Zagallo, nicknamed “The Professor,” even played a key role in 4 of the 5 World Cup titles won by Brazil.
As a player he won two trophies: in Sweden in 1958 and in Chile in 1962. On the bench, he led the Seleçao to the 1970 title in Mexico and was assistant coach during the 1994 title win in the USA. In 1998 he was national coach again when Brazil lost 3-0 to France. Only Franz Beckenbauer (1974 as a player and 1990 as a coach) and Didier Deschamps (1998, 2018) were able to emulate him.
