World Environment Day: Telekom cooperates with EnergyWeb

Today, June 5th, is International World Environment Day. Since the resolution was passed in 1972, around 150 countries and millions of people have been involved in sustainable projects to raise environmental awareness. Also present: Deutsche Telekom. The long-established company is working together with Energy Web on the energy transition and is continuing its expansion plans in the field of blockchain technology.

As BTC-ECHO learned in advance, Telekom MMS has joined the Energy Web Foundation ecosystem, which consists of energy companies and IT service providers. As a validator, you provide the infrastructure and thus secure the decentrally distributed Energy Web Chain. The aim of Energy Web is to accelerate the transition to a global economy based on efficiency and renewable energies.

Blockchain is sometimes used to implement the goals agreed at the first World Environment Conference in Stockholm in 1972. Because: Energy Web is the world’s first public blockchain project for the energy sector. As a member and validator, Telekom MMS contributes to better network security of the blockchain and all corporate solutions that use Energy Web technologies. Dirk Röder, head of the blockchain department at Telekom MMS, explains:

The collaboration shows that blockchain technology can be an important tool in the fight against climate change. Telekom not only secures the energy network, it also contributes to achieving climate targets and at the same time promotes renewable energies.

Energy Web promises a decentralized, digitized and decarbonized energy system. So-called “Green Proof” applications are intended to create “comprehensive transparency in new green product supply chains”. What’s more, solutions for data exchange connect small clean energy systems such as solar systems on roofs with electric vehicles and thus contribute to maintaining grid stability.

Telekom is expanding in the crypto sector

Telekom has become an integral part of the crypto sector. With Ethereum, Chainlink or Polkadot, the telecommunications provider supports several leading proof-of-stake networks. The long-established German company recently became one of a hundred validators in the Polygon network. You don’t go empty-handed: the company receives the classic staking rewards for checking and approving transactions in the network.

Telekom MMS also hosts its own bitcoin nodes. Whether mining will become part of the services in the future remains to be seen. Because: Telekom is aware of the criticism in connection with the high energy consumption, but also sees the potential of Bitcoin for regenerative power grids.
