The 16-year-old from Basel shines in the freestyle with a new personal best and finishes her first World Championships in 8th place.

In January, Kimmy Repond surprisingly won bronze at the European Championships. Now the 16-year-old from Basel has confirmed her coup in Espoo, Finland, at the World Cup in Japan. After a strong 13th intermediate place after the short program, Repond achieved the best performance of her young career so far in the freestyle.

Repond delivered an expressive, flawless performance on the track Exogenesis Symphony by the British band Muse. This was rewarded with 131.34 points – a new personal best for the Swiss high school student.

Thanks to the brilliant freestyle, Repond increased her points account together with the short program to a total of 194.09 points. A mark that one or the other competitor then scraped past, so that Repond achieved an excellent 8th place in the final at her first ever participation in a World Championship.

World Championship gold to defending champion Sakamoto

At the top of the classification, Kaori Sakamoto defended her world title. With a total of 224.61 points, the 22-year-old Japanese came out on top just ahead of South Korea’s Haein Lee, who scored 220.94 points. Sakamoto only delivered the second-best freestyle behind Lee, but thanks to her lead in the short program, she was still able to defend her title in front of a home crowd.

Bronze went to the Belgian Loena Hendrickx (210.42), who had won silver at the European Championships in January before Repond.
