The winners of the World Press Photo Contest 2024 have been announced. A selection of the award-winning images.

The “Press Photo of the Year”

Touched: The jury was deeply moved by the way this image evokes an emotional response in every viewer. The dead girl, Abu Maamar, was killed along with her mother and sister when a rocket hit their home in Khan Yunis.

The photo of a young Palestinian woman with a dead child in her arms in the Gaza Strip is the world press photo of 2024. The jury awarded the photographer Mohammed Salem with first prize on Thursday in Amsterdam. The Palestinian took the photo for the Reuters news agency. “It was a strong and sad moment that sums up what is happening in the Gaza Strip,” he said. The jury spoke of a moving “insight into immeasurable suffering”.

“Valim-babena” wins in the “Story of the Year” category

“The Two Walls” wins the “Long-Term Project Award”

“War is Personal” wins in the “Open Format Award” category
