Would you like an iPhone with a USB-C port?

The European Parliament wants to force Apple to adopt USB-C on all its devices, including the iPhone. Is this good or bad news for you?

Is the Lightning port living its last moments? It’s been several years since a Sword of Damocles took up residence above Apple’s proprietary port. It must be said that the apple brand is an exception today in a market largely dominated by USB-C.

This week, the European Parliament returned to the charge with a new official press release, indicating that “ready to start negotiations on a universal charger to reduce electronic waste and optimize the use of different types of portable devices“. This press release marks the beginning of a new phase which should eventually lead to the application of a new law aimed at requiring manufacturers to switch to a universal standard.

For its part, of course, Apple defends itself by evoking the innovative side of proprietary technologies. However, if it is true that this was the case when Lightning was launched against micro-USB, this position is much more difficult to defend today against USB-C, especially since some iPads and MacBooks have already adopted the universal port. The “Made for iPhone” accessories are nevertheless a significant source of revenue for Apple, which suggests that a financial dimension motivates the maintenance of the Lightning port for the moment.

In any case, the discussions could take several years to come to fruition, which gives Apple time to refine its MagSafe wireless charging and perhaps one day offer an iPhone without a port at all.

Would you like an iPhone with a USB-C port?

But beyond all these considerations, how about an iPhone with a USB-C port? Do you see a real interest in it, whether it’s more ecological or practical, or are you attached to the Lightning port?
