Lamsfuss’ dramatic sweet corona revenge

A year later, badminton ace Mark Lamsfuss has fulfilled his dream of EM gold twice over – and is taking revenge on Corona, because an infection had brutally robbed him of his dream a year ago. At the same time, the golden boy achieves historic things with his triumphs.

The dream of the European title, stolen by a corona infection on the final day – the bitter reality for Mark Lamsfuss a year ago. Now the doubles specialist wrote German badminton history with two successes at the European Championships in Madrid. The memories of the missed final in Kyiv “popped up briefly,” said the 28-year-old. “I was just happy that I had the chance to play the finals this time.”

With the victories in mixed and doubles, Lamsfuss and his partners achieved something historic: the first European Championship title for the German Badminton Association after a ten-year dry spell. Lamsfuss is the first player in 20 years to win two gold medals at a European Championship – thus ensuring the best German tournament result in 50 years.

“We also want to win World Cup and Olympic medals”

Lamsfuss is particularly proud of the final success with Isabel Lohau in mixed. “We had never beaten the French before,” said the Olympian from Wipperfeld after the three-set win over Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue: “We’ve been working on ourselves and developing further since last year.”

This also applies to the doubles with his club colleague Marvin Seidel. Exactly a year ago, they were slowed down by a positive corona test just a few hours before the European Championship final.

Lamsfuss felt no satisfaction, and there was no time to rest either. The European titles are “brilliant”, but not the maximum. “We also want to win World Cup and Olympic medals,” he said. German badminton players have never won medals at the Olympic Games. The next opportunity to do so will be in Paris in 2024. Lambsfuss sees potential for improvement. “It’s always nice when you can make history. I’m very proud of that too, but we want more.”
