Wrong switch – trams in Innsbruck collide: 5 injured

A not-so-everyday accident caused a stir in downtown Innsbruck on Wednesday. Two tram sets had crashed head-on. In total, the crash claimed five injuries.

On Wednesday around 1 p.m., a 49-year-old tram driver drove the tram west on Anichstrasse in Innsbruck. At the same time, a 51-year-old tram driver was driving the tram eastwards. According to the current status of the police investigation, the 49-year-old drove to the left in the direction of Bürgerstraße instead of straight ahead due to an incorrect operation of the switching device for the switch setting and consequently collided with the oncoming tram 51-year-olds. Five people injured, one seriously The collision resulted in the tram driver and the tram driver and a 67- and a 21-year-old passenger being slightly injured. The injured were taken to the Innsbruck clinic by ambulance. As it later turned out, another person, a 75-year-old Austrian, was severely injured in the collision, according to the treating doctors. While the accident was being recorded and the clean-up work was being carried out, the accident site was closed to all vehicle traffic in all directions until 1:50 p.m. Traffic jams and delays The accident caused traffic jams in Innsbruck city centre.
