Belinda Bencic continues to impress in Miami. As in the three previous rounds, she did not have to stand on the court for long in the quarter-finals and did not lose a set. Bencic defeated 28-year-old Australian Daria Saville (WTA 249) 6-1, 6-2 in 69 minutes.
In the semifinals, Bencic meets Japan’s star Naomi Osaka. The 24-year-old is a four-time Grand Slam champion (2019 and 2021 at the Australian Open and 2018 and 2020 in New York), but after a difficult phase in the world rankings she slipped down to 77th place.
Last defeated Osaka 3 times
Osaka played just as brilliantly in the round of four in Florida as the Swiss: she recently lost only 3 games against Danielle Collins (USA/WTA). In a direct comparison, Osaka is 1: 3 behind Bencic – lost 3 times in a row in 2019 on different documents.
Bear market finally ends
With the entry into the semi-finals, Bencic broke a negative series. Since her golden triumph at the Tokyo Olympics last July, she has reached the quarterfinals of WTA tournaments 7 times – and lost 7 times.
The 25-year-old from eastern Switzerland was last seen on American soil in semi-finals in 2019, namely in Indian Wells and at the US Open. Along the way, she ever knocked out Osaka…
