Olympic champion Belinda Bencic (WTA 21) continues to be in enviable form: at the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston (USA) she defeated the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrowa (WTA 54) in two sets 6:4, 6:3 in the semifinals.

In the second set in particular, Bencic showed a convincing performance on the clay surface in South Carolina. She made the difference when the score was 3:2. After the Russian had fended off 2 breakballs from Bencic, the eastern Swiss unpacked all her skills: with a passing ball and a push to the net, she brought about the preliminary decision with the break to 4:2.

Short period of weakness in the 1st set

In the first round, Bencic had started furiously with a break, but then had to let her opponent equalize to make it 4: 4 before she took the serve from the Russian again and secured the starting set after a good 40 minutes.

Not only the final result, but also the other statistics speak for the Swiss: She hit more aces (4), committed only one double fault and earned twice as many breakballs (6) as her opponent.

Bencic’s final opponent will be determined in the encounter between Ons Jabeur (TUN/WTA 10) and Amanda Anisimova (USA/WTA 47). You can see whether Bencic can secure her 5th title at WTA level live on SRF on Sunday from 7:30 p.m.
