Apple presented on the occasion of its WWDC 2022 the new version of its operating system dedicated to tablets. So here is iPadOS 16, available now from developers and the curious.
It’s a WWDC rich in announcements that Apple is opening this evening with its traditional keynote. After detailing iOS 16 dedicated to smartphones, the apple unveils its counterpart reserved for tablets, iPadOS 16.
Among the new features, some are common to iOS 16, of which iPadOS remains the twin for large screens. This is the case of new features related to voice input, Home apps, News or even Live text in videos. Here are the main takeaways from iPadOS 16.
Collaborative work
The system highlights other points and relies on collaborative work through the apps of the Apple suite, such as Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Files or even Safari. It is now possible to add new participants using Messages. The app is also easily accessible in multi-window from a shared document, as well as FaceTime, so that collaborators can easily discuss their project.
Apple also announces Freeform, always with a view to facilitating collaboration on projects created via Apple applications. It allows in particular to add visual elements, annotations and other drawings, since the app supports the Apple Pencil stylus.
Redesigned interface
A little more complex than it seems, the update to iPadOS 16 includes new management of multitasking allowing you to drag and drop windows, customize their size or even create groups of applications in the dock at the bottom of the screen. We also note that, to facilitate the work of those who consider their iPad as a real computer, that iPadOS 16 allows tablets equipped with an Apple M1 chip to be connected to external screens at a maximum of 6K resolution. The Stage Manager function allows you to create personalized workspaces taking into account any external screens. Apple promises that it will be possible to work with a maximum of four apps on the iPad and four others on the connected screen.
On a lighter note, iPadOS 16 gains a dedicated Weather app with its share of animations and a notification system in the event of future bad weather.
Availability of iPadOS 16
New features of iPadOS 16 are available as developer preview on a wide range of shelves. All iPad Pros are eligible, as are iPad Air from their third generation, iPad Classic (from fifth generation) and iPad Mini (fifth generation as well).
